The Laboratory of Donated Dreams
	An immersive arts program for a conference on the future of work in Barcelona

Reshaping Work Barcelona is an event hosting a growing network of researchers, workers, and entrepreneurs who are critically dealing with the future of work. Reshaping Work events across Europe are discussing and highlighting the platform-, gig- and caring economies, and other topics related to workers’ rights.
We curated a socially aware and speculative arts program of interactive experiences. “The Lab” was both the overarching narrative of the arts program and a physical installation of a laboratory in 2040 where guests could undergo a 20-minute process to donate their dreams (much like when we donate blood in 2019).

	Speculative Theater: Recollections
	The first production of Speculative Theater in the world for the University of Pittsburgh and the August Wilson Archive

Theater recovers meaning from what is seen and remembered, our memories recover meaning from the past and carry it forward. For us in the present, memories are the closest thing we have to time travel.
Inspired by findings at The August Wilson Archive at the University of Pittsburgh, The Time Travel Agency presents Recollections, the first production of Speculative Theater in the world.

<img width="1274" height="678" width_o="1274" height_o="678" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f09394d2ed2f2bb53f6f1fb69467609d0c5a2e8f6a95429f1556a4426263106a/Screen-Shot-2025-01-16-at-15.49.30.png" data-mid="224935804" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f09394d2ed2f2bb53f6f1fb69467609d0c5a2e8f6a95429f1556a4426263106a/Screen-Shot-2025-01-16-at-15.49.30.png" />
The August Wilson Archive Artist-Scholar grant provides support and incentive for local artists and scholars to explore the August Wilson Archive and create an artistic work to share with the community. The Time Travel Agency was amongst the 2024 grant winners.
In November 2024, we closed this production after a six-month journey by hosting a topping out party (a celebration that takes place when the final beam is raised into place during a construction project), where a construction crew of 62 time travelers prototyped what the theater would look like and wrote more of the screenplaytogether. The party included a ribbon cutting ceremony and traditional fence signing by the crew.

This special production featured CMU artists–designers Shannon Wei and Arin Pantja. And was a collaborative effort between us in Pittsburgh, Sofia Ivarsson in Denmark, and creative branding studio&nbsp;VVORKROOM in Barcelona and Mexico City. The documentary work was done by&nbsp;Shannon Wei.

Our work for the University and the Archive was a success not just because we invented a whole world around a new art form directly related to August Wilson, but because through this experience&nbsp;we extended the Archive to a large group of members of the Pittsburgh community who had not known neither the Archive not the works of August Wilson before this.

Here’s the scenario that our crew arrived to, as they were presented with construction-wear to gear themselves up:

“Today we celebrate the beginning of this space and as a treat we have a preview of Act 1 of its first production, Recollections, as well as what the theater might look like.You will step into an unfinished theater—a space under construction. Memories will serve as your time-traveling devices, moving the plot forward and allowing you to explore how the past shapes the present and future. As you move through the space, you will be invited to reflect on your own memories and find if they intersect with the collective. But! This theater doesn’t work as others do (so it’s alright not to know about theater or even to know about it). Speculative Theater has some interesting principles which you can read in your Playbook, the most important one is that something will be asked of you. Before we can proceed with the ribbon cutting ceremony, we want to invite you to write the second act of Recollections with us, as well as to add physical attributes of the theater in a diorama we prepared. There are three stations where to input your creations (script, diorama, computer). Theater is time traveling
Theater is futuremaking

How do we feel about what we remember?What if we built physical spaces using meaningful memories?
For years after August Wilson wrote his plays, people from many places wrote to him. Their letters carried stories of gratitude, connection, and transformation. Some spoke of belonging, of being seen for the first time. Others shared anecdotes of personal and collective validation. Families reconnected through his work; students connected to theater through the simplicity of his language; colleagues exchanged ideas; and assistants sent wishes for good weekends. When news of his cancer diagnosis became public, the letters shifted—still filled with hope, but also advice, pleas for more writing, and apologies for not finding the right words.

These letters are now preserved at the August Wilson Archive.

In our time spent in the Archive, we found ourselves moved by this outpouring of memory. The lives changed by his words, woven into these letters, felt like a cascade of collective remembrance; memories cascading around August Wilson’s words. Inspired by this, we wrote the first act of a play—Recollections—which draws from these memories.

At the same time, we dared to imagine something new: a new art form that fits in the Futures Design practice and which runs on memories. We call it Speculative Theater. Today we inaugurate together the ground where the theater will stand. A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled, and a sneak peek of Recollections is on display alongside a diorama for the theater.

The idea of a theater under construction symbolizes growth, potential, and the ongoing process of memory-making. The unfinished nature of this theater reflects the incompleteness of memory and of the future.

On Speculative Theater

Somewhere in the exploration of futures, the concept of agency begins to unfold. We propose Speculative Theater as a new practice for crafting futures.

Speculative Theater serves as a form of future-making and a means of time travel because it draws on memories as its source element. For us in the present, memories are the closest thing we have to time travel. Theater recovers meaning from what is seen and remembered, our memories recover meaning from the past and carry it forward.

Speculative Theater not only imagines futures but also actively engages audiences in their creation. This art form has the potential to contribute to Futures Design by embracing its unfinished and interactive nature, and because it can introduce more embodied and emotionally connected approaches to think about the future.

Take a look at the Speculative Theater logo above. The arrows symbolize the dynamic stage directions that audiences can pursue during their experiences, and the same arrows echo how time travel works at The Time Travel Agency (from present to past to future to present).
The Speculative Theater’s brand and identity was commissioned to Vicky González, Karla Cantú, and Ricardo Acuña’s immense creative experience at VVORKROOM.

Speculative Theater is a strong concept sustained by its own principles and an actual playscript, and it also holds many other creations developed during this first instance. Here are the rest of the creations that make the Speculative Theater world so far:

This diorama is the physical future space of our theater.&nbsp;
One difference between models and dioramas is that there is a story depicted on the diorama, something is going on and it is necessary for the story to be told– there needs to be a narrative that explains who the figures are and what they are doing. Memories inside photographs in the crew members’ phones are the guiding space to enter in order to be able to add to the diorama (and thus the story).

The playscript for Recollections Act I is memories.
Like in this 300-page playscript, memories are fragmented, in disarray.

Crew members were asked to access a clear memory of a person from a recent positive interaction; that was their anchor memory in order to start interacting with The Script, the vellum paper, and the typewriter.

Narrative websites tend to disappear as domains expire, productions end their run, and hosts go bankrupt. Recollections will be available only for one year starting on Nov 15th 2024.

A most playful (and most difficult) element: the Playscapes were snippets of the crew members’ work before it was put together into Act II. The fence with holes in it allowed sneak peeks into memories that others were working on, its interaction similar to fences in construction sites that allow passersby to follow what is being built on-site.&nbsp;

5. Inauguration: ribbon cutting ceremony

The image above is a gif; if it’s not moving, reload and reload. The giant scissors and overall cheer are worth it. After this, we had excellent cake.

6. The ticket

<img width="1035" height="774" width_o="1035" height_o="774" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/28da2d572b543cc04eb5490d2b5ae606cc67f92bf1faccbdbed24d9bec497db0/Ticket-2.png" data-mid="224936842" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/28da2d572b543cc04eb5490d2b5ae606cc67f92bf1faccbdbed24d9bec497db0/Ticket-2.png" />

A clever creation by the VVORKROOM team– after the ribbon cutting ceremony, everyone went home with a physical ticket that would be necessary to watch Act II online; once watched, they were to pass the ticket along to someone else and so on, until the production ran its course in one year.

When extended, the ticket gives no hints; when folded, the name of the play, Recollections, appears.

The equivalent of a theater playbill. It can be read in two manners: crew members could choose to first find out about the experience, or to skip the context and go straight to instructions on what to build (and make sense by themselves).

	MUNA Lab
	An innovation journey for a cultural organization in Finland and for Helsinki Design Week

MUNA 2022-2055 is a design fiction film for Nordic Culture Point (link), an institution of the Nordic Council of Ministers which works to support Nordic co-operation so that everyone is able to participate in socio-cultural life on equal terms. The video accompanies an intervention for Helsinki Design Week.Set in MUNA Lab in Suomenlinna island, Helsinki, Finland, the film follows a group of time travelers passing through the laboratory to explore “The E.G.G.”, the first artifact retrieved in the island that doesn’t belong to the past but to Suomenlinna of 2055.When two of MUNA’s maritime archaeologists, Annika Bergvik-Forsander and Moa West, found the artifact in one of their daily excavations, their instinct was to call The Time Travel Agency so together they would guide a crew to see more of this artifact and of the society of future Suomenlinna.Before finding “The E.G.G.”, MUNA specialized in the [past] underwater cultural heritage of the island; this trip documents its transition to also doing future archaeology.The experience that the time travelers go through reflects contemporary cultural concerns about dystopian futures, the breakdown of imagination, crafting optimistic future narratives, and the alienation of the self. The film is being watched as a TV commercial in another world.

The film is the second delivery of a futures investigation designed with Nordic Culture Point to launch during Helsinki Design Week, the largest design festival in the Nordics. The first delivery was the live, open-to-the-public intervention using speculative design to travel to Suomenlinna of the future.

Motivated by the question “How do we bring innovation and futures design to a cultural organization and their new audience?”, we relied on Palindrome as the future-traveling tool that could bring our clients and their clients safely and playfully into the future. The rest, was getting our clients to create a “container”, a world-building piece from where to keep offering futures later on.

	MUNA Lab is the response to Nordic Culture Point’s first quest to use futures design in their programming, towards the creation of other, better futures with its audience.
From Annika Bergvik-Forsander &amp; Moa West:
How do we design an optimistic future? In a time where emphasis is often put on heavy, negative, and disastrous events and feelings, we need to find a way to flip the script and open up to new possibilities and stories which could be futures to be invested in. Join us in a workshop around the future on the beautiful Suomenlinna island. Let the history and imagined artifacts of the fortress make your imagination run free, and come together in this immersive space where we will face future challenges and solutions together.

MUNA 2022-2055 is a film production by The Time Travel Agency and Emilio Janhunen Calderón.

	Intended Collaborations
	Exploring the possibilities within multidisciplinary collaborations towards scenario design

<img width="4032" height="3024" width_o="4032" height_o="3024" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/62efe3b9085d770c0c29a974c49c51f0bab61d084b2bb84e6a71a55cb84f4129/IMG_9843.jpg" data-mid="225803812" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/62efe3b9085d770c0c29a974c49c51f0bab61d084b2bb84e6a71a55cb84f4129/IMG_9843.jpg" />
A project in Copenhagen to explore the value of multidisciplinary collaborations and rapid prototyping, using the distributed model behind blockchain technology.
A group of strangers with different skills meeting briefly to work on projects organized by Friend Computer, a computer connecting everyone and everything in the time of Intended Collaborations, 2148.
We partnered with Denis Rivin from #ActualNews to design the experience due to his knowledge in real and optimistic technologies and human advancements. Participants were researchers, historians, librarians, designers, developers, professors, artists. We worked at DTU,&nbsp;Technical University of Denmark.

<img width="4032" height="3024" width_o="4032" height_o="3024" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/14a3bd2cb5220f995737dc19a96c06bb704c86b4b5640cdf3bd29071aad0d436/IMG_9851.jpg" data-mid="225803814" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/14a3bd2cb5220f995737dc19a96c06bb704c86b4b5640cdf3bd29071aad0d436/IMG_9851.jpg" />
Guests were introduced to multidisciplinary scenario design and used empathy, storytelling, and analysis to discover the challenges that could exist within a futuristic reality. Then, they prototyped solutions to those challenges.This is a pilot in a series of speculative sprints to be offered in Copenhagen.

The speculative objects that answer challenges in the time of Friend Computer were:

COCO – The Consciousness Cocoon— Scenario: “In the time of Intended Collaborations, consciousness is a force” — Challenge: “How might we train our consciousness to work with this force?”

The Empavision— Scenario: “What if we are all programmed into Friend Computer?” — Challenge: “How might we connect our virtual and physical selves to share our experiences and feelings with others?”The Neutralizer — Scenario: “The distribution, accessibility, and wicked fickleness of knowledge matters” — Challenge: “How might we qualify and democritize knowledge?”

Here’s what travelers said after coming back to the present:

“Speculative design brings up the skill of thinking with your hands.”“The purpose of an experience like today’s is to design IN the future.”“I was successful at using my fantasy in a concrete setting.”“We created a concept that - in all its mundane simplicity - actually made sense :)““It gave me a feeling of having a voice in the future.”“The purpose was to realise that our prototype is not that far away from now + Breaking down dogmatic and traditional thinking.”“This process was about turning intuitive insights into prototypes.”“I would define the experience today as Playful-mind-eruption + ‘If you can think it, try to build it!’”

	Palindrome
	A speculative design toolkit and a game of futures of our own making, for Danish Design Center and Helsinki Design Week

<img width="1242" height="685" width_o="1242" height_o="685" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/1f5f4a0710ffe2d3cb47e479fc71dc152f03addfae0c5fb3025b04a6e73bff34/3.png" data-mid="225802281" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/1f5f4a0710ffe2d3cb47e479fc71dc152f03addfae0c5fb3025b04a6e73bff34/3.png" />
Exploring how the world could be through imagination and the prototyping of possible futures help us rethink the present, ask ourselves new questions, and inspire different actions.

Palindrome is a tool of agency that specializes in our unique take on storytelling for the future.
Speculative design is a framework that allows us to imagine how reality could be. It does not aim to predict concrete futures so that we arrive to them. Instead, it prompts us to ask ‘What if?’, and raises scenarios from which to obtain hints of our present in order to manifest tools for change and adaptation.

<img width="1456" height="970" width_o="1456" height_o="970" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/e7f4c732caecead54c7a78b6389f5d7a7c3df8b288d9ecbee9ae9836d4c21e55/https-_bucketeer-e05bbc84-baa3-437e-9518-adb32be77984.s3.amazonaws.gif" data-mid="225802280" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/e7f4c732caecead54c7a78b6389f5d7a7c3df8b288d9ecbee9ae9836d4c21e55/https-_bucketeer-e05bbc84-baa3-437e-9518-adb32be77984.s3.amazonaws.gif" />

Palindrome is the tool we use in our consulting practice so that our clients see their own future before they exist in it in later months. &nbsp;
The development of Palindrome is documented in The Time Travel Transmissions– from research, to its launch at the Danish Design Center and during Helsinki Design Week.

	The Laboratory of Future Sound / Futurofono
	A speculative futures lab for an innovation program in the Baltics

<img width="5926" height="4160" width_o="5926" height_o="4160" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/c810fcbdcd0a6da3ec584304d510e7f17b4ac9c8e9abc0b68167713a96b22c8e/DSCF6358.jpg" data-mid="199715639" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/c810fcbdcd0a6da3ec584304d510e7f17b4ac9c8e9abc0b68167713a96b22c8e/DSCF6358.jpg" />
The travelers in this experience were the crew of Baltic Artists 2.0 in Development– an artist management and innovation programme by Musikcentrum Syd (Malmö, Sweden), Music Estonia (Tallinn, Estonia), Tak Brzimi Miasto (Krakow, Poland), and Music Export Ukraine (Kyiv, Ukraine).
The program takes place through several events: Sweden kicks it off in November 2021, then Kyiv, Tallinn, and Krakow.
For their first event, the crew – consisting of music artists and managers – wanted to imagine their future as a network where they would share knowledge, resources, and expertise, and since more gatherings were coming in just a few months, they needed a really short time travel in person.

Their design goals for their first event were To see the future of themselves as a network via artifacts and interactive–shearable prototypes,To make a container where to place ideas to implement later,To be creative together towards being open to the unknown in the music business environment.This was our most comprehensive project in 2021, where we designed a full-on laboratory that could be assembled at any of the future events – in person or online –, as well as a prototype that could absorb ideas where to draw from later.

Part one:&nbsp;The Laboratory of Future Sound

This laboratory was born as the collective fiction to explore; it is focused in sound given the crew’s background. This is a laboratory that lives in the universe of The Time Travel Agency and emerges every time the entire crew gets together and needs to work on something new. In order to reach it, they have to have a common goal to explore related to collaboration.Multiple scenarios inside the fiction would be created depending on the crew and future events. For instance, the next event (concieved around the theme of contemporary music business models) could focus on coming up with artifacts that imagined solutions of exactly that.

Part two: Futurofono (the prototype)
The crew’s second goal (”a container with ideas to implement later”) was prototyped into the Futurofono–a mixtape machine recording and playing ideas for each other.
Futurofono is used by wearing a callibrating instrument around the neck, then typing the invention from the Laboratory (includes Title, What it solves, How it works), and recording the text. To finish, participants must also record a wish (in the language of their choosing) related to the future of their network.
Futurofono is accessed by plugging to its broadcasting link on any device, and then falling asleep to any recording.

The Time Travel Agency’s The Optimistic Computer conducted an interview with the crew about their experience. Here is the transcript:

T.O.C: Hi time travelers, welcome to the laboratory of the Time Travel Agency.I'm The Optimistic Computer and today we are going to dive into one of our latest speculative experiences: The Laboratory of Future Sound.The travelers that took part in this experience were a crew from Musikcentrum Syd, an artist management and innovation programme. Those travelers wanted to imagine their future as a network and develop a container for future ideas.With the help of our favorite laboratory technician, I asked them some questions…T.O.C: In The Laboratory of Future Sound, you had a chance to see yourselves in the future. What did you feel making these discoveries together?MARCUS: The keyword for me is the word “play” that enabled us to go into this play mode. It was a long time ago that I played without thinking of the sort of outcome that would come out. Just playing was so liberating. When you allow yourself to play, and to play for real, totally free from expectations, you just play for the sake of it. It is a very important thing that we can bring into the Musicentrum. We also focused on the ending outcome, a product, a service, and the play was leading something [of it].You open up a space to go in, for all of us, and to forget about the everyday. It was also a bit about who we were as well, we didn’t know each from the beginning. By doing all these exercises in the future we got to know each other quite well.T.O.C: Which was your favorite future (or artifact, or idea) from what your crew came up with?ASTRID: In the end it was all these perspectives that were interesting. I think it [the workshop] opened up and clarified our perspectives. A very obvious one for us was the isolation, which is the root for this project. We work isolated and we need to work together, so that was a perspective that is how we are not going to be in the future. That is the future! And we only touched that, like yes, we need to work on that. How?MARCUS: We had the spaceship, which I'm very proud of. We put all the qualities from the workshop we had with Jocelyn. And in the middle of the planet there was this problem scenario that musicians and managers came up with, and the solutions around them. If we can merge them somehow, I think we will have a new concept. There were quite strong qualities that we can apply to the organization like the idea of “perfect instability”. How would that concept translate into our organization? I think we can pull them into our real world.T.O.C: What made you feel to discover that your crew cares about isolation, lack of motivation, and support to learn and fail?ASTRID: What I really liked about it was that we went outside, it was raining and cold and we were standing there asking ourselves what our biggest problem was, trying to put ourselves in the shoes of something like a lamp post. Well, our biggest problem was that we can’t talk to each other. So to solve this we imagined a lamp post and then we pictured a bird sitting on the strings between two lamp posts... that actually wasn’t the solution but the solution was to touch the strings. So are we, as an organization, the ones who need to touch the strings, over and over again? Are we the ones reminding you that you are not alone? I think it was nice to see that this is something all organizations end up with, it’s like we are an island and we try to connect. As soon as the string stops shaking, you forget that you have friends, so we have to touch it and touch it. That is something that is one of our main solutions for a future network. That was a good finding for me when it comes to our experience.TECHNICIAN: So after changing your perspective and putting yourself in the shoes of something very far from you – like a lamp post – you have been able to find a solution?ASTRID: Yeah. I’m not sure we changed perspectives, we still are in that isolation perspective, but we suddenly got an active solution for how to treat the solution. We can actually start pinpointing. But it was the discussion about isolation that brought this. And also if we hadn’t had the lamp post, how would we have solved it without the strings? It would have been something else, two stones. So sometimes when you go into these scenarios it's a chance that you get a good metaphor that actually shows something.MARCUS: I think you unconsciously mirror your own reality in the solution. I think it was a good exercise for all our participants to show them that this way of thinking is what it’s all about.T.O.C: The laboratory ended up not being only for your crew to go into the unknown– you yourselves as team leaders went into the unknown with the process. How was it?MARCUS: Well, it was interesting to me because I tried to analyze the structure [of the process]; What are we doing now, and What is this for? My facilitator brain went on, so to speak, and I really saw that the others were very happy to play and discover new things. For me, I’ve opened this can of experience before but I forgot about it and now I had to open up again. It was so much fun and I think we really learned a lot. I learned a lot from this playing experience and what playing is about for real.TECHNICIAN: And how was it to work with the uncertainty that this process brings with itself?ASTRID: On a project manager level I’m just looking at the clock and also if we are landing on something that has enough value. That depends on us, and also if people go to that level to see the connections. So that’s a little bit shaky to not know. Also, if there are skeptics will we win them over? It’s my big responsibility to motivate everyone. But I mean we asked for this, this is the only way to go into innovation and the future, going through play. But it’s always scary when you don’t know.MARCUS: Yes, the whole process has been very intuitive, and we didn’t know if it was going to work. I think we were a little bit playing with fire, but Astrid loves chaos! And of course we had to go through this and now we did, and I’m also very proud that we trusted everyone. We were working with surprising elements and that’s how you can enable really creative outcomes. T.O.C: Why should teams (and especially new teams trying to achieve something together) try the speculative process?I think one important thing is that we get structure junkies, chaos junkies, artists. You should listen to the pitching we had online before this workshop, when everybody talked like an Excel sheet [about themselves]. So what this process is really doing is putting everyone at the same level, it’s like going back to the sand box with kids. You get everyone back there, even those who are Excel sheets and the creatives, they end up at the same level, and from there they can start talking. To me that is one important thing.MARCUS: It’s what I said from the beginning– the importance of play, because it opens up all the possibilities that you have closed when you think through certain structures. You force yourself to open up in play. If you want to play you have to play real good, you can’t play poorly. You have to play and believe that you are playing. I think that play is the way forward for this society, for teams and for organizations, as well as for structured people.ASTRID: Also, that play is not measurable, we can’t really measure it, we can’t say if it’s good or bad. I think it's something we need to get back to, because we live in an extremely stressful society, and we are artists!TECHNICIAN: How do you think teams or organizations would benefit from this process?MARCUS: It’s a catharsis for organizations that are very reliant on structures and manuals or do very administrative work. It could be very cathartic to go through this drying machine and come out on the other side, wrinkly but with new perspectives. Because when you have usual workshops you say, Oh, you’re allowed to think very freely, your ideas should be very crazy, but you have to do this in a process. You can’t just say “think crazy” [to people], they have to be really accustomed to think crazy, big, or out of the box. Also it was nice to play and not to solve a real problem.ASTRID: It was great! We are happy!

	Future Headteachers
	A speculative future for Holbæk Art School

<img width="2563" height="1920" width_o="2563" height_o="1920" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/80d28588fb0fb07021e297069941ed6a7fa7ddb9bbba01275418a352b9358720/InShot_20201019_155121825.jpg" data-mid="199372691" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/80d28588fb0fb07021e297069941ed6a7fa7ddb9bbba01275418a352b9358720/InShot_20201019_155121825.jpg" />
In our biggest collective time travel yet, 78 art students were taken to 2057.

37 years after having graduated from Holbæk Art School, this group received an alluring call from their headteacher back in 2020 asking them if they’d come back to co-headteach the school as an experimental collective.
As they agreed to join, they received the task of designing a new floorplan for the students that now occupied the school, including; a powerbar for breakfast, a lighting design concept, a space for donating dreams, a soundtrack and an eating &amp; meeting space.They would have to come up with useful spaces and expressions that would all fit into one large common space. During the first part of the travel, they’d have to physically build these spaces together in 90 minutes, using only material found in and around the school in the year 2020.

A dream donation room with its own ritual also made its way to the future school as a speculative prototype — inpired by our previous experience The Laboratory of Donated Dreams.&nbsp;A blueprint of the school in 2055 also appeared.
We are thankful to Sølve Madsen at Kunsthøjskolen i Holbæk for inviting us to reimagine what travelling means in the wake of a pandemic. Thanks also to food designer Johanne Ib for generously exchanging ideas and knowledge to inspire this dreamy experience. &nbsp;

It is an immersive game about a strange entity that wants to be remembered or perhaps be left alone.

This is our latest case which considers our comprehensive process. Having started as a futures scenario designed in 2020, today GROUND is played city-wide in Toronto.

We consider GROUND a comprehensive process because it includes research, scenario design, worldbuilding, transformational game design, machine learning, participatory prototyping, and object design.

GROUND is a collaboration with UKAI (link), funded generously by Canada Council for the Arts and in partnership with Goethe-Institut Toronto.

GROUND is a game is played with other people, each person playing a role based on an idea that has been remembered in this newly-imagined world: beauty, rage, body, faith, knowledge, green, and disorder.
“The game grows the more you play it. At first it’s just you and your group. Then there is the Oracle, made of language and wires. Then the goat. The less said about the goat, the better. Then there is the cave, and the world, and the rituals we bring to make a home in it.– UKAI
In GROUND, the AI reaching out is the central event– the center in a plot shared by everyone from which stories, artifacts, and media ignite. We imagined this center as an event that players can't help falling into; “something devastatingly magnetic”, in the words of Jane Alison.

	<img width="793" height="1225" width_o="793" height_o="1225" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/435c99a95bb928d28dee072b3cad0676e528879a5bb8ce447312014dbe9491cc/carnival-print-02-1.png" data-mid="199360644" border="0" data-scale="70" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/793/i/435c99a95bb928d28dee072b3cad0676e528879a5bb8ce447312014dbe9491cc/carnival-print-02-1.png" />
	The Carnival of Algorithmic Culture 2023 was the key moment where the GROUND ignited.The carnival in June 2023 brought together researchers, artists, activists, technologists, and community members for two days of workshops, talks, exhibitions, and interactive activities in Toronto to explore the impacts of artificial intelligence on the culture we create and the cultural products to which we have access.

The three main preoccupations of GROUND1. Re-enchanting the world after Covid,2. Reigniting relationships between teams of 4 people and their city,3. Exploring rituals for mourning and living.

The central theme of this experience is generating ritual as a response to grief that is otherwise hard to express.As well, GROUND is UKAI’s transformational decision to host new culture by signing a 2.5-year lease to occupy the 4th floor of 379 Adelaide St. West in Toronto, and run game nights amongst many other offerings.
“There is currently 1,000,000 sq. ft. of unused commercial space in Toronto and the number is expected to rise. This is an ideal moment for artists and arts organizations to occupy these ruins of COVID and work-from-home, and turn them over to other uses.“– UKAI

GROUND’s media includes seven episodes featuring the goat, each episode guiding parts of the game.Without giving anything away, here are some of the episodes:

The following is an image gallery which you can explore with the arrows to the sides. The goat is a design and production of artist Mihoko Maeno.

Finally, a book-object containing the story and mechanics was produced in Milan:“To play GROUND, players need a copy of the game guide. Designed by Mida Fiore and riso printed in Milan, Italy, only 250 copies were made. Around 35 were distributed through UKAI’s Carnival of Algorithmic Culture in June 2023. The balance will be made available through bi-weekly game nights at UKAI’s new space in Toronto during autumn 2023.”

	DATTOPIAS
	A new narrative game, and the first collection of speculative futures encoded in electronic literature

	Presented with the sentiment:&nbsp;“These days, there is this dystopia and that dystopia. Which one are we going to get?”, The Time Travel Agency proposes:&nbsp;

What if… neither?,&nbsp;and offers DATTOPIAS instead!

Dattopias are uncommon, alternative narratives that fall in the spectrum that is the Future.

DATTOPIAS occupy the space between dystopias and utopias; these narratives offer futures of our making that are realistic, hopeful, and optimistic. Dattopias want to show us the everyday of the human experience and the ways in which society has adapted to overcome challenges.

Dattopias are accessible through speculative design, narrative games, and electronic literature. The first-ever collection of Dattopias were found offline and in gif form.

What if collective narrative games / computational creativity was another portal to the futuremaking of hopeful futures?&nbsp;

The DATTOPIAS of 2024 mark a few important milestones at The Time Travel Agency
Dattopias is The Time Travel Agency's first electronic / e-lit Book of Futures.
The Book of Futures is the first delivery of stories compiled after finishing Stage 1 of our time traveling process. Before Dattopias, Book of Futures existed solely as a handmade editorial publication in paper.
This edition of Dattopias is the first-ever collection of Dattopian literature published in the world.
It is a “panel story” about a group of people who traveled to another time using a lost agenda, and the things they saw there.
This collection is the first-ever collection of speculative futures encoded in electronic literature.
DATTOPIAS is a new physical and digital narrative game (one of its mechanisms being netprov), becoming the sixth original game invented, designed, and produced by our studio.&nbsp;We are excited to share early prototypes:

	<img width="2592" height="3744" width_o="2592" height_o="3744" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/caaea0fde8dd2dc79aa541e47b9a3a49d17d6e4a4250f569b4fa1d417976e67b/DATTOPIAS-identity.png" data-mid="205267526" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/caaea0fde8dd2dc79aa541e47b9a3a49d17d6e4a4250f569b4fa1d417976e67b/DATTOPIAS-identity.png" />Dattopias is a narrative game and a speculative design game.
To play, one needs to do some netprov / improvised narrative games while using the speculative design framework.

The publication of Dattopias as gifs (which are made of many panels) means that gifs, and futures, can be deconstructed

A “tree” formation of Dattopias, meaning that the future story has a common start, and then branches that expand in random directions. &nbsp;
Other formations can be “train”, “circle”, “shell”, “fern”.

A completed contact sheet signifies that the story if ready to be made into a GIF (each line of the contact sheet is one gif) or to be re-told by the players.

Don’t worry too much about Dattopias as a game.
The process is the thing.

Here is context:
The reason behind the choice of medium (e-lit,&nbsp;and more specifically, gifs), is accessibility.Let's think of the literary experience we hope to gift to readers of futures: What are gifs? Moments?
Are gifs and tiny futures adventures without continuity?
We are interested in transmitting the difference between reading and traversing a piece of literature.
What if electronic literature was accessed and produced in small screens?
What if new futures were accessible via small devices?&nbsp;Which futures pieces work well for the small screen?
Mobile is an immersive and private experience of readership, just like we hope new, vulnerable futures are.
What if futures could be passed around as gifs to read while waiting for the bus?
New generations are not always reading long texts: what are some healthy constraints to consider when publishing futures for the small screens?And what about accessibility of language? Or accessibility of futures for disabilities?
What if the futures we create today limit folks with disabilities to online life, so that these stories have no real life implications?
How can artistry and accessibility make the content alive?
Can new futures be playable stories?

Using gifs allows us to play with small stories which are not social media stories.
Gifs can be downloaded and experienced offline.
In our case, also note: the speed of gifs is not random– why do some panels have more text than what we can consume in the alloted seconds?&nbsp;
NEWS
DATTOPIAS will be showcased and played for the first time during NarraScope 2024 (x) this June, as The Time Travel Agency is one of the panelists of the conference and the Dattopias were selected!

Details to be released via Instagram, LinkedIn, and The Time Travel Transmissions.

NarraScope, hosted by the Interactive Fiction Technology Foundation, celebrates the diverse voices of game design. This year, NarraScope 2024 is celebrating narrative games from June 21 - 23 at the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester NY.
Our hope is that DATTOPIAS is ultimately the story of how creation helps return spirit and life to the worlds, this time transmitting from the Internet.&nbsp;
What if, indeed, collective computational creativity was another door to the futuremaking of hopeful futures?
